“These are multi-vision subjects that integrate various views, beliefs, life experiences and attitudes In Performing Arts we explore the world through performance”.
Performing Arts at Hind Leys College is where the emphasis is definitely on performing. We offer Music, Dance and Drama at GCSE level, Music and Performance Studies at A level and Dance at A/S Level. In these subjects we aim to provide students with a first rate grounding in the separate disciplines but also to provide many and varied opportunities for performance. The Performing Arts Staff Team at Hind Leys firmly believe that it is our job to prepare students to the highest level in order that they are equipped to pursue Music, Dance and Drama as a career at 18+, or interest and lifelong entitlement.
During your time at Hind Leys students are encouraged to take part in as many performances as possible including:
· Arts Reviews
· Dance Festivals
· Major Musical Productions
· Performances in the Community
· Assembly Performances
· Arts College Band Concerts
· Youth Dance Show
· Drama Club Performances
· Workshop Activities
These performances are sometimes a coursework requirement but often they are just for fun and the sheer thrill of performing. Students are expected to make an active contribution to the performing life of the College if they opt for Music, Dance or Drama at GCSE or A Level. For Music this means being part of the Arts College Band (if you play an orchestral instrument) for dance taking part in the Dance Festival and for Drama being involved in the Main College Production — onstage or backstage.
We expect the highest standards from our students simply because we know the rewards can be phenomenal, and we have been proud of the achievements of our students in the past. We look forward to welcoming dedicated talented performers and enthusiastic beginners to the Performing Arts Department and sharing in their future achievements and successes.
Involvement in performances at Hind Leys is not restricted to students studying within the Performing Arts Departments. All students are invited to be involved and experience the rewards of performance, particularly the major college productions which pulls together a large group of staff and students from across the college community. The College is fortunate to have a full size theatre as part of its facilities. This has recently been refurbished and features new seating and a new Grand Piano. Recent productions have included Grease(2002), Les Miserables (2003) - Hind Leys being one of the first schools to take on this ambitious production, Guys and Dolls (2004), Dracula Spectacula (2005), The Hired Man (2006), High School Musical (2007) and last years production We Will Rock You! (2008). The college is very proud of the levels of excellence reached in performances at Hind Leys which have attracted large audiences from the local community.
Physical Education
"Realising potential through participation and performance"
Every student at Key Stage 4 has one Physical Education lesson a week. Students experience a PE Curriculum which continually reinforces the true values of sporting involvement and physical activity:
- By encouraging active involvement through offering a range of experiences that meet the needs of individual students, and encourage active involvement by all as performers, observers and officials.
- In developing positive attitudes, encouraging a sense of responsibility to oneself and others as individuals, whilst generating a sense of fairness, honest involvement and good behaviour.
- In ensuring safe participation, recognising and following relevant rules, laws, codes, etiquette and safety procedures for different activities.
- In promoting health and positive lifestyles through artistic expression and physical activity, this being of equal importance at all levels of ability
As part of our Healthy School’s status we extend the opportunity for students in Post 16 to participate in Physical Education on Wednesdays (P1) and Thursdays (P3).
For students that wish to obtain a qualification in the subject we currently offer BTEC courses at Level 2 and Level 3.
The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport is equivalent to two GCSEs, the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport is equivalent to two A-levels (please click on subject to find out more).
